#40 closed defect (fixed)

Improve design of the in-station state view

Reported by: Henrik Heimbuerger Owned by: MrWabbit
Priority: minor Milestone: 1.80

Description

The new station display looks like it's just positioned anywhere without any real anchor. I think we need to provide some kind of border there. I know it's the same design as on the in-flight map. Maybe I just need to get used to it, but right now, it bothers me.

The old one was quite ugly, but at least it had clear positioning.

Priority: criticalminor

The Command Mode station stats display replaces the ship stats display when in Base. It is the exact same position and style (because i am lazy and didn't feel like creating new artwork for this)

Of course making it prettier is not hard. But is it really a critical bug?

comment:4 Changed 15 years ago by Henrik Heimbuerger

Nah, not quite sure why I set it to critical. Probably because I was sure that I wouldn't want to release is the way it is right now.

As for the design, I think the point is in-flight, nothing has a border. All the UI elements are floating over the view into the outside world, so the status display does look natural there.
That's not the case in the hangar, where everything has some 'anchor' in the view at the hangar. So it really irritates me there.

New commit by MrWabbit? (revision [133]):
[Partial Fix for #40] this at least prevents the station name line from breaking when in lengthily-named sectors.

Definitely looks better than before.

I'll keep the ticket and have a look at it in-game.

Note to self: make sure the perceived line margins are the same, the header line currently looks closer, probably mostly due to the paratheses extending below the baseline.

any new insights on this?

Thanks for the reminder. Putting it on my list. Ridicule me if I haven't looked into it by the weekend.

New commit by cort (revision [180]):
[Partial fix for ticket #40] Made some minor visual adjustments to the ship/station status view:

  • Moved the ship status view a bit to the right, so it's left-aligned with the last orders.
  • Increased the distance of the station name header to the remaining data, so the text doesn't overlap vertically (in-base only).

I'm fine with it now. Have a look at it, please.

I think we could eventually unify all the outer margins (distance between UI elements and the screen edges) somewhat, but that's more on a bigger scheme and not specific to the ship/station state view (maybe after 1.80).
