#44 closed defect (wontfix)

Remove the target camera from the in-flight map

Reported by: Henrik Heimbuerger Owned by:

Description

The in-flight map currently shows a target camera. While that would be nice to have, it currently (read: without a code change) seems impossible to do properly, as switching to the map also switches the camera position, making this more confusing that useful.

Alternatively, if the target camera could be fixed to show the target from the perspective of the player's ship, I'd be all for fixing it and leaving it in.

I do not think this should be removed, honestly. To me personally, it does not seem all that confusing. It may not add much functionality, but it doesn't seem to detract any either, and I think pilots would be unlikely to depend on the target view to orient themselves when flying in F3, even if it could be done from the POV of the ship.

For what it's worth, I find it useful when, for whatever reason, it's not immediately obvious what I've targeted in F3, which might happen if I'm trying to target something that's being crowded by other ships, for example. A big giant picture of what I've targeted appearing on the screen is useful instant feedback.

FWIW, i'm not a 100% sure it's that distracting either. I can see how being able to see whether a ship is heading straight for you can be useful. I'm just not sure not being able to do that makes this completely unusable.

Isn't nifty enough to basically have a instant zoom view of your target in the minimap?

Does nifty imply useful?

What's the use of seeing your target as an image, but with an incorrect orientation, when it's type is already stated on the screen?

Because it's not incorrect. It's orientation is perfectly correct from your current - bird's eye - point of view.

You can see whether for instance a bomber is turning for the top or the bottom aleph, which miner a spotted int-pack is going for, or whether a fig is flying straight at your prox dispenser, or is being smart enough to go for a parallel course. You can also tell when a targeted miner is turning away from a rock because it's full, before it has moved an inch.

So yes, in this case nifty does come with usefulness.

I see your point (and it's a good one), so I take the "incorrect" back and replace it with "unintuitive". ;)

I'm gonna leave this as it is. I like the way it looks and i'm okay with the orientation of the target. I guess this will remain Cort's pet peeve with this HUD. :)
